Dumpsite

Thailand’s western border has long been home to large numbers of migrants from neighbouring Myanmar. Just outside the Thai town of Maesot a community of Burmese has lived and worked on the Dumpsite for decades, sifting through the town’s rubbish to find materials they can sell for recycling. Living in makeshift houses, often built on top of the mountain of compacted rubbish itself, and with little access to clean water, electricity or sanitation, life is hard. In 2009 a small humanitarian organisation initiated a project to relocate some of the families and create a new community away from the dumpsite where they could work the land and raise their children in a safer environment.
